The film was directed by David Mackenzie with a screenplay by Patrick Marber and Chrysanthy Balis.

The film deals with themes of sexuality, class, repression, obsession, passion, madness and jealousy set against the grim backdrop of a Victorian asylum in the 1950s. Some terrific acting, especially from Richardson, Mckellen and Bonneville, but the film fails to live up to the source material, which is one of the author's best. - отличным качеством и звуком!
